Camphor Oil (Cinnamomum Camphora)
Camphor is obtained by steam distillation of woods of C. camphora. Camphor has many pharmacological properties. Camphor gives a soothing and cooling effect, which helps to reduce pain. It is useful to treat neuropathic pain, as well as pain associated with the inflammatory response of damaged tissue such as in osteoarthritis. Camphor is known agonist of pain receptors resulting in long term pain relief. It helps to cure swelling of various body parts, which give relief to joints pain and help to improve the condition of pain related problems. It is a common ingredient in pain relief medications. Ajwain (Trachyspermum Ammi)
Ajwain with its characteristic aromatic smell and pungent taste, is widely used as a spice in curries. Peppermint (Mentha Piperita)
M. piperita contains about 1.2-1.5% of essential oil and menthol as its main active ingredient. A study showed that topical application of M. piperita reduces pain and swelling in patients with osteoarthritis. Nilgiri Oil (Eucalyptus)
Eucalyptus oil is obtained from fresh leaves of Eucalyptus Globulus. Eucalyptus oil have different pharmacological activities like anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anthelmintic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant. Clinical studies show that eucaluptus oil could be used as potent anti-arthritic agent. It possesses anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting the release of prostaglandins or other inflammatory mediators from cell membrane by stablising lysosomal membrane. It possess anti-arthritic activity by inhibiting protein denaturation as protein denaturation is one of the possible pathway for pathogenesis of arthritis. G. procumbens is a polyphenol rich herbal medicine with anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anti-oxidant effects. Cajeput oil is distilled from the leaves of M. leucadendron. Cajeput has been a popular remedy for managing pain. The oil contains a compound called cineole.
