Ashwagandha (Withania Somnifera)
Ashwagandha is a well known herb of the Indian ayurvedic system of medicine as a rasayana (rejuvenator). It is renowned as an adaptogenic herb, which means it is used to help the body resist psychological and physiological stress by adapting to the needs of the body accordingly. Ashwagandha can serve as an aphrodisiac in stimulating libido and it builds semen potency as well. It is considered best as a potential aphrodisiac drug. It also helps in erectile dysfunction. Ashwagandha helps to increase semen and also helps in ejaculation of semen. It deals with low testosterone level, helps in anxiety and depression and helps in management of erectile dysfunction. A study was conducted to evaluate the spermatogenic activity of root extract of ashwagandha in oligospermic patients. Safed Musli (Chlorophytum Borivilianum)
Safed musli is known for its adaptogenic, aphrodisiac and rejuvenating properties. Traditionally, safed musli root has been used to treat male impotence, oligozoospermia and erectile dysfunction. Roots of safed musli are known to improve male reproductive performance by increasing the testosterone level. Safed musli is particularly used for individuals with low sperm count & low libido which will improve sexual weakness. It is an excellent traditional herbal remedy for infertility, oligospermia or low sperm count, premature ejaculation and physical weakness. Gokhru (Tribulus Terrestris)
Tribulus terrestris has been used for generations to energize, vitalize and improve sexual function & physical performance in men. The fruits have been used in the treatment of infertility, impotence, erectile dysfunction & low libido in ayurveda. The active extracts and constituents of gokhru could improve sexual function through activating aphrodisiacs and improving fertility in men. Analysis of phytochemical and pharmacological studies in humans and animals revealed an important role of gokhru in treating erectile dysfunction and sexual desire problems. Clinical studies indicate that gokhru may be useful in mild to moderate cases of erectile dysfunction. Ethanol extract of gokhru influences spermatogenesis. Mucuna (Mucuna Pruriens)
All parts of M. pruriens possess valuable medicinal properties in traditional system of medicine. Mucuna seeds, flowers and leaves are used against snake bites and also used as a uterine stimulant and aphrodisiac. The plant has been studied for various activities like antidiabetic, aphrodisiac, antimicrobial, learning and memory enhancement, antihelmintic and anti-inflammatory activities. Clinical studies prove the aphrodisiac effect of mucuna. The oral administration of 5gm of mucuna seed powder once in a day for men with decreased sperm count & motality ameliorated psychological stress and improved sperm count & motality. The study also concluded that mucuna not only reactivates the antioxidant defense mechanism, but also helps in the management of stress and improves semen quality. It also significantly increased the sexual desire, penile rigidity, erection and duration of ejaculation with orgasm. M. pruriens seed powder rejuvenates the harmonic balance of male reproductive hormones in infertile men and reactivates the enzymatic activity of metabolic pathways and energy metabolism. Mucuna improves male fertility by its action on the hypothalamus-pitutary gonadal axis. Mucuna significantly improved serum testosterone, luteinizing hormone, dopamine, adrenaline and noradrenaline levels in infertile men & reduce the levels of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and prolactine hormone (PRL). Jaiphal (Myristica Fragrans)
M.fragrans, commonly known as jaiphal/nutmeg, is a very common spice, which is used around the world. It has wide range of fixed oils and essential oils in it. Jaiphal is a well considered medicinal plant for its extraordinary properties like aphrodisiac, hepatoprotective, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, antioxidant, anticancer etc. It enhances the digestion. It is used as remedy for nausea, stomachache, headache, vomiting, diarrhea. It is helpful in treating the problems related to spleen, liver & eyes. It significantly enhances the blood circulation, boosts up the brain functioning. In ayurveda, jaiphal is used in treatment of numerous diseases. It significantly works on vitiated vata and kapha. It is an aphrodisiac. It is helpful in inducing menstruation and ovulation. It is used in treating erectile dysfunction. A clinical study conducted to evaluate the activity of M. fragrans showed that 50% ethanolic extract of the plant exhibited aphrodisiac activity. Shilajit
Purified shilajit is used in ayurveda as a remedy for several diseases. It is a pale-brown to blackish brown exudates that oozes from sedimentary rocks worldwide. It is described as a cure for all diseases as well as a rasayana that promises to increase longevity. In ayurveda, shilajit is employed for the management of male reproductive disorders & in particular, under the parlance of VRISHYA(an aphrodisiac with special reference to spermatogenesis). Purified shilajit was evaluated in healthy volunteers of age 45-55 years for its effect on male androgenic hormone, testosterone. The study demonstrated that purified shilajit increases the total and free testosterone levels in healthy volunteers. (Andrologia, 2016)
